Apple が Mac OS X 10.5.7 Update を公開した。今回のアップデートも２回の再起動が必要らしく、しばらくの時間を要するが、個人的な環境ではインストール直後に “blue screen of death” の状態となって自動再起動に失敗したため、電源ボタンを長く押す事で手動で再起動させることになったのは冷や汗物だった。また、アップデート環境設定からのダウンロードは込み合っていたのか、11%ほどで失敗したため上記リンクからブラウザ経由でダウンロードをした。

さて、このアップデートで最も楽しみにしているのはメールが持つメモ（Notes）の iPhone との同期だ。（要 iPhone OS 3.0 & iTunes 8.2、~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/Notes.mbox/ のバックアップを忘れずに。）これは昔持っていた iPod nano でやっていたような、Mac OS 上で取得した読み物などをオフライン環境（喜楽のラーメンを待っている間とか）で楽しむことを目的としている。:-)

このブログで今のところ最も人気の高い投稿 “IMAP を使って Gmail と Apple Mail の迷惑メールフォルダを同期する” では触れなかったものの、メモも Gmail と同期ができるのだが、iPhone OS（実際は iPod touch）を使うようになってからカレンダーと併せて Gmail からデータを引き戻すことにして、”この Mac 内” に保存するようにした。

そう言う意味では iCal や iPhoto が利用できない Windows と同期をする iPhone 利用者は選択肢が少なく、不便な利用体験しかできず気の毒だと思う反面、Windows のソフトウェア開発者にとってはチャンスが転がっているとも言える。

更新：この Mac OS X 10.5.7 Update を必要とする Safari 4 Public Beta (5528.17) も別途公開されていた。

更新１：更にこの Mac OS X 10.5.7 Update を必要とする X11 2.3.3 をインストールする業をすっかり忘れていた。XQuartz というだけあって描画処理が速く感じられ、滑らかなフォントで表示できるのはとてもうれしい。視覚的な大幅な修正という意味では、アイコンも変わって心機一転というところか。

miniStack FW/USB2.0 Enclosure Kit V2 を使っていて全く同じ問題に遭遇した。

Pismo に乗っている 10.4.11 を使ってみたが、この指摘のようにうまくいかなかった。Tiger 以前のインストール DVD も持っているのだが、なんと幸運なことに今は廃止になってしまった Firewire 400 ポートを使うことができた。

さらにコメントを読んでみると、WD MyBook や LaCie 1TB USB2 といったディスクで同様の問題が起きているようだ。

Go to the Partition tab. Create two partitions. Under Options, select GUID Partition Table (what you would use to make a Mac OS boot disk) and click OK then Apply.

• Once your partitions are in place, do it again, reverting back to just one partition, but still keeping the GUID Partition Table option. Click OK and Apply again, and at this point you should be cool.

#13 worked for me after trying to format my 1TB Fujitsu/Siemens USB External to no avail. Don’t use the erase tab, make two partitions and select GUID (in fact I managed to create 2 partitions without selecting this). And then reformat as 1 partition GUID.

最終的にはこのコメントの方法を利用して無事に Leopard の Disk Utility を使ってハードディスクをフォーマットすることができた。また、一旦フォーマットできてしまえば USB に差し替えても問題なく使用ができた。

こんな作業をしていたのも、この確定申告時期に HDD をスッ飛ばした親族がいたので 300GB に交換装着した MacBook の Time Machine 用に利用することにした次第。:-)

ブラウザウィンドウを9通りの位置と大きさにワンクリックで設定する “Window Bookmarklet” を Leopard の機能 “Spaces” と併用することが多くなったので、ここでその理由と手順を説明しようと思う。

さまざまな作業を同時にこなしてくれるMac。プロジェクトの数がどんどん増えても大丈夫。Spacesを使ってアプリケーションウインドウをグループ化すれば、デスクトップはいつもすっきり。余裕のスペースを実現するMac OS X Leopardの新機能、Spacesを使って、簡単にスペースを切り替えられます。

このエントリを思いついたのは Widget を開発中のことだった。ブラウザ上で JavaScript と JSON フォーマットで作ったブログパーツを検証中に Dashboard を起動したところ、Widget は雑用や事務という案件名を付けるにふさわしいという当たり前のことに気が付いた。

Dashboard はファンクションキーやマウスで簡単にデスクトップ環境と往来することができるが、Spaces ではショートカット “control + 左右矢印キー” を引き金として、プロジェクト、つまり事業計画や構想案毎にウィンドウを配置しておくことができるし、またこれは Dashboard で Widget を配置していることと同義となると考えたため Spaces の環境を整備することにした。

まず、初期状態ではアプリケーションを “コマンド + タブ” で切り替えると Space 番号も切り替わってしまうことがあるため、このヒントを参照して機能を変更しておくと良い。

次に、同じく初期状態において Spaces のデスクトップ環境が 2 by 2 のテーブル状に配置されているが、右方向への列が見慣れているためこのように横並びにした。そして Spaces を使って計画毎に使用するアプリケーションを配置するのだが、ここで Safari のウィンドウを制御するために Window Bookmarklet が登場する。

このようになってしまった場合には、ブックマークバーの左から9番目に Window Bookmarklet を保存しているので、”command + 9″ で起動する。Widget のように展開するのであれば矢印ボタンを、ウィンドウズ・スタイルで広げるなら中央のボタンを押す。

個人的には左端の Space を書き言葉について学ぶ場所とし、後は順にソフトウェア開発案件毎に並んでいる。G5 と Macbook を併用しているが、MacBook の方は Skype や iChat のような通信用ソフトウェアの使用も一つのプロジェクトとしている。加えて言うと Safari のホーム画面を RSS を使った Widget が並ぶ iGoogle にするとオンライン活動が活発な方には更に便利かもしれない。

今まではアプリケーション（Window で言えばタスク）、つまり PC 側のソフトウェアを切り替えることがオペレーティング・システムの最も上位層にあったが、Spaces の登場で人間側のプロジェクトも管理ができるようになったということは大変喜ばしいことである。ちょっとした不満点はメモリの上限というハードウェア的なことになるが、こちらも時間が解決してくれるだろうと期待している。

しかしこの発想は、MacBook の小さな画面で多くの（特にスイッチした人や初心者）ウィンドウズユーザーのような全画面表示に囚われていたならば気が付くことはなかったかもしれないと胸を撫で下ろしている。

最後に Window Bookmarklet はレンタルサーバーを使用しているため、もしお役に立てれば運用費として寄付をお願いしたい。「これは JavaScript だから、クライアントサイドでしょ？」と思われる方はぜひコードを参照してみてほしい。

I found a big trouble with Keychain Access and Safari not to be able to store Internet Password if you have two or more basic authentication accounts of every directories on the same domain. So I examined this problem here I set. Obviously, the reason is that Keychain Access fail to locate an accurate URI and overwrite account attribute to identify the authentication information as a same one.

If you will skirt around this issue, you have to edit Keychain manually. Specifically, create new password file or duplicate existing one, and modify “where” attribute to suit entire location. In many cases, all you have to do is just append the name of directory, I think.

I realized that I can update Twitter using iChat with Google Talk account. Until now, I have posted Twitter with iChat with AIM, however, the AIM bot of Twitter is unstable or the service seems to be suspended.

The icon of the Jabber bot is very KAWAII!

In the living-room yesterday, my wife complained about that Apple Remote won’t awake from screensaver in Leopard. So I looked at Apple Support Discussions, same issue has already reported there as a bug.

Some Japanese user have found how to crash Leopard. To replicate this circumstance, perform the following steps.

1. Open the System Preferences > International > Input Menu.
2. Turn on the “Kotoeri” and the “Hiragana”.
3. Launch an application to be able to input a text.
4. Using the Hiragana, type “hisasii” or “hatake”, then hit the space bar to convert from Hiragana to Kanji.
   If you enter “hatake”, you have to hit space bar several times and select “More…” as shown in the picture.

So, how’s that? You will be able to move your mouse, switch or force to quit applications. However, you will ultimately just have to hold the power button down to terminate. It is the same if you use PPC or Intel, upgrading or clean install under Leopard.

Both of them are used a general word in Japanese. I think there may be still many problematic words in Leopard and what is worse It sounds as if a few Japanese run this at retail stores this weekend. I hope they do not have the same eyes as a dead fish.

Update 1: GraphicWizardsLair indicates avoiding this bug. Until Apple addresses this, It’s better to make a copy of the file “/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LangAnalysis.framework/Versions/A/Support/J_Character.dict/” from Tiger.

Update 2: Leopard 10.5.1 Update fixed this issue. There was no problem, when I replaced the Tiger’s older J_Character.dict v2.2.1 with newer v2.2.4 as I backed up. I was wondering if there must have been something that made trouble in the dictionary file, but I couldn’t figure out how Apple work around in the ChangeLog. (Sure, I know that a stealthy fix is their specialty, Anyway, I’m so grateful to Apple.
